The library collection, which has never had permanent home, has most recently been housed in Snider Plaza's Chase Bank building. But library officials have been looking for new location, in part because the Chase building has been the focus long-running battle between owner Albert Huddleston and city officials. Huddleston wants to undertake massive redevelopment project city officials, prodded residents and merchants, have resisted letting it become as large as proposed in various forms during the past years. This week, the fate the library became political issue as Huddleston and city officials floated separate plans. Earlier this week, Huddleston said that has endorsed several candidates in the upcoming City Council elections and suggested that he'd help work solution for the library. But Thursday, city leaders said they have already been in talks since the fall about moving the library to the Plaza at Preston Center. Details have been finalized, an "agreement-in-principle" to move the library there is expected soon, officials said. In response, an executive with Huddleston's development firm, Legacy Hillcrest Investments, said the firm has always planned "a first-class, permanent library to part its project." "At point the city came to Legacy and indicated its interest in stand-alone library the same block as Legacy's property," said Legacy executive Preston Phillips. The floating collection, which has been homeless since it was launched decades ago, is now the object of lots of affection. After city officials said they're eyeing home for the library in Preston Center, Albert Huddleston's team said they have been planning to take care of the library all along. Team Huddleston says the only reason the library wasn't in their most recent proposal to redevelop Chase Bank is because city officials said they wanted separate building. Right now, the library is at Hillcrest and Daniel in the space donated Chase Bank They have been in talks about moving the facility since April. When the agreement is finalized, it will go to the library board to review and then on to City Council. If approved, UP would sell certain streets and alley-ways in the Plaza in exchange for second-floor library space at least square feet owned the city. The new, commercial building would retain the same look most shops and restaurants below, adding 380-400 more parking spaces. An expected move-in date has not yet been confirmed. Creating permanent home for the University Park Library is long-held dream city leaders and the Friends the University Park Public Library. Currently the library is located in donated space in the Chase Bank building at Hillcrest Road and Daniel Avenue. In April, the City University Park announced it was in talks with representatives the owners The Plaza at Preston Center and the board the Friends the University Park Library about potentially locating the library in The Plaza. Owners The Plaza have worked closely with the city and representatives the Friends the Library to create plan designed to enhance the center while also providing new home for the library, which provides an important service to the community. With the letter agreement nearing completion, the city is distributing renderings the proposed library meant to give residents an idea the anticipated look the project, although the final design may differ somewhat. The owners The Plaza will work directly with the city and library representatives the library interior space. Once the agreement is finalized, it will forwarded to the library board for review. Then the agreement will formally considered the City Council. The agreement, if approved, would call for the city University Park to sell certain streets and alley rights- of-way easements in adjacent to The Plaza in exchange for second-floor library space at least 15,000 square feet to owned the city. The space would part new commercial building in The Plaza, which will solely financed and constructed the center owners. Off-street parking for the library also would provided owners The Plaza. Because existing zoning at The Plaza already allows construction the proposed building, public hearings are not required the city Planning and Zoning Commission the City Council. As it is envisioned, The Plaza new building retains the current configuration shops and restaurants and offers the opportunity to add additional parking spaces and improve traffic flow throughout the center. The construction is proposed to be completed in phases to minimize disruption and access to The Plaza popular restaurants and shops. The final letter agreement will include an expected move-in date, although that date has yet been decided. But here goes. A month ago I mentioned that I had been vested with the power of bequeathing the title of Most Deserving Dad , most likely to keep me out of the running so the conclusion wouldnt be foregone. Chef Kent Rathbun, radio host Gene Gates, and yours truly judged 11 finalists for the award, which was sponsored by the Plaza at Preston Center. It was an incredibly tough call. We were supposed to rate the entries from 1-10, and we explicitly forbidden from giving every single one a perfect score. I finally decided to rank them (I had two no. 7s) since I would have felt like an a-hole for giving any of these guys a less-than-perfect absolute score. The ultimate winner was Steve Smith, whose slickly produced entry, submitted by his wife and kids, you can see above. Smith received various goodies from Plaza shops, which his fa mily presented to him on Fathers Day. Personally, I was routing for Carlos. He has lung problems but still manages to play catch with his sons and be a doting father. He also has a car with no air conditining and two windows that wont roll down, and he takes his kids to Half Price Books to spend their allowance.
